Types of Colombian visa in 2026
Visitor Visa (V)

Important: a Visitor Visa does not make the foreigner a resident. Some subcategories may authorize specific activities, but that does not mean the holder can work freely for any Colombian employer.

Migrant Visa (M)

It may apply to those who have a Colombian spouse or permanent partner, an employment contract, an investment, a pension, independent professional activity, a company in Colombia, or a family bond with a Colombian national.
This visa can be granted for up to 3 years, depending on the category, and in some cases allows the holder to accumulate time toward a Resident Visa.

- Spouse of a Colombian national.
- Permanent partner of a Colombian national.

Resident Visa (R)

It can be obtained, among other cases, through accumulated time as a Migrant Visa holder, by having renounced Colombian nationality, or under other special categories provided by regulation.
The Resident Visa grants an open work permit in Colombia, but does not mean Colombian citizenship. Nationality is a separate process before the Cancillería.
In addition, although the Resident Visa allows permanent residency, the holder must renew the visa every 5 years. It can also lose validity if the holder is absent from Colombia for 2 consecutive uninterrupted years.
General requirements to apply for a Colombian visa
Although each visa has specific requirements, most applications require a common set of documents.
General documents typically include:
- Valid passport.
- Copy of the main passport page.
- Copy of the last entry stamp to Colombia, if applicable.
- Digital passport-size photograph.

If a document was issued abroad, it may require apostille or legalization. If it is in a language other than Spanish, it must generally be submitted with an official translation.

How to apply for a Colombian visa in 2026
The Colombian visa process is carried out digitally through the official Cancillería portal.
The general process is:
- Identify the correct visa category.

- Complete the online application form.
- Upload documents in digital format.
- Pay the study fee.
- Wait for the authority’s review.

The Cancillería typically charges two fees:
- Study fee: paid when submitting the application and non-refundable.
- Visa issuance fee: paid only if the visa is approved.

Cédula de Extranjería: what to do after receiving your visa
If you obtain a visa valid for more than 3 months, you must generally register the visa and apply for a Cédula de Extranjería at Migración Colombia.
The general deadline is a maximum of 15 calendar days from the date the visa is issued or from your entry into the country, depending on the case.
In 2026, the general fee for the Cédula de Extranjería is COP $294,000.

Foreign investment registration must also be demonstrated when applicable.
M Visa – Business Owner / Shareholder
Applies to foreigners who hold a stake in a Colombian company.
The minimum investment required for this category is 100 monthly minimum wages (SMLMV).
Incorporating a company on paper is not enough. At renewal, the authority may review economic activity, bank statements, tax filings, social security contributions, Chamber of Commerce registration, and other records proving the company genuinely operates.
M Visa – Pensioner
Applies to foreigners who receive a certified periodic pension.
It is generally required to demonstrate that the pension meets the minimum established amount and comes from a valid and verifiable source.
This visa is common among retired foreigners who want to live stably in Colombia.
Common mistakes when applying for a Colombian visa
Choosing the wrong visa
This is one of the most common errors.
For example, someone who wants to work for a Colombian company should not apply as a tourist or digital nomad. The category must reflect the applicant’s actual situation.
Submitting foreign documents without an apostille
If a document was issued outside Colombia, it normally must be apostilled or legalized. Without this, it may be rejected or generate a requerimiento.
Using unofficial translations
When a document must be translated into Spanish, an official translation is required. An informal translation may not be accepted.
Not demonstrating sufficient financial solvency
Bank statements must be clear, consistent, and coherent with the visa being requested. Recent deposits without explanation can raise concerns.
Letting the previous visa expire
Immigration continuity is key, especially if you want to accumulate time toward residency. A safe-conduct pass (salvoconducto) does not count as continuity for applying for a Resident Visa through accumulated time.

Assuming the visa guarantees tax residency or citizenship
