No, it is not necessary to wait a specific amount of time after marriage to apply for the visa. However, it is important that the Colombian marriage certificate presented was issued within three months prior to the visa application.

If the marriage is dissolved, it is mandatory to notify the Visa and Immigration Authority about the change in cohabitation circumstances. The dissolution of the marital relationship may affect the validity of the visa, and you may need to change your migratory status or apply for another type of visa to remain legally in Colombia.

The main difference lies in the legal recognition of the relationship.

M Visa – Marriage: This visa is granted to foreigners who are legally married to a Colombian citizen. You can apply for it immediately after getting married, and it can be issued for up to 3 years. After holding this visa for 3 years, you become eligible to apply for Colombian residency.

M Visa – Permanent Partner: This visa is for foreigners in a legally recognized common-law union (unión marital de hecho) with a Colombian citizen. To apply, you must first register the union and wait for 1 year. The visa is initially granted for only 1 year, and after 5 years, you can apply for residency.

Both visas provide a legal pathway for foreigners in a relationship with a Colombian citizen, but the Marriage Visa offers a faster route to residency and a longer initial validity compared to the Permanent Partner Visa.
