Living in Colombia as a Digital Nomad

Another advantage of investing in Colombia’s real estate market is the annual appreciation of property values. Investing early in development projects can be substantially more economical than purchasing upon completion. As the value of these properties, priced in Colombian pesos, rises over time, investors stand to gain significant profits.

The Colombian government is also proactively boosting property investments with migratory and fiscal incentives. These include tax benefits, eased residency requirements, and other financial advantages for foreign investors.

Such policies lower the entry barriers for investment in the real estate sector and align with broader economic strategies aimed at stimulating market growth and attracting international capital.

Top cities to consider

The beauty of Colombia and the kindness of its people has been even award-winning.

Among the cities you may want to keep in mind if considering Colombia as your next digital nomad stop, we highly recommend you to visit Medellín, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Bucaramanga and Pereira.

Living in Medellín

Medellín stands out as a premier destination for digital nomads in Colombia, renowned for its dynamic culture and affordable living expenses.

Whether you’re seeking a remote work haven, a place to save money, or simply to immerse yourself in Colombia’s natural beauty, Medellín offers an ideal setting, particularly for those with automatic tourist visas.

You’ll discover paradise in Medellín where you can have all the amenities you can possibly think of.

From accommodation options, culture, food, safety, an abundance of coworking spaces and cafes, and basically everything you can possibly need.

With its pleasant climate, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant urban atmosphere, Medellín consistently ranks as a top choice among digital nomads in Colombia, prompting many to enlist the assistance of visa agents for a streamlined application process.

From 1 to 6: Colombian “Estratos” and what they mean

One important aspect is that all the cities in Colombia are divided by socioeconomic “levels”, called “estratos”, the purpose of these is to sort residential properties that receive a public services bill and is based on a classification of elements, circumstances or a certain phenomenon. There are 6 levels classified as follows:

  1. Bajo-bajo
  2. Bajo
  3. Medio-bajo
  4. Medio
  5. Medio-alto
  6. Alto

For the matter, we will be specifically addressing one of the most popular destinations, and one of the coolest cities in Colombia, that is Medellín.

All of the neighborhoods in Medellín reside into one of these “estratos” too, and depending on that, comes the safety level, commodities and amenities, entertainment and cultural offer, and the general lifestyle type.

To mention some of the most popular neighborhoods in Medellín, you might want to look up into: Laureles, Belén, Floresta, Estadio, Poblado (one of the most popular options, but just beware of gringo prices here), and nearby cities itself all part of the metropolitan area just like Envigado and Sabaneta.

Finding home away from home

From vibrant co-living spaces fostering a sense of community to shared accommodations ideal for budget-conscious travelers, there is an offer of living arrangements tailored to suit every preference.

Those seeking flexibility may opt for short-term rentals through platforms like Airbnb, while boutique hotels provide a touch of luxury amid the bustling urban landscape.

For those desiring a more traditional living experience, real estate agencies offer a range of long-term rental options, which would be a monthly rental, allowing digital nomads to settle into their Colombian home-away-from-home with ease.

For this type of accommodation though, there are some specific requirements that you must fulfill, such as national income certificates and guarantors or the so called “fiadores”.

These “guarantors” or “fiadores” are individuals or entities that guarantee the fulfillment of a financial obligation if the debtor fails to meet it.

In most cases, it is difficult for a digital nomad to meet these requirements. However, in some cases, agreements can be reached with real estate agencies where payments for several months in advance are agreed upon as a guarantee to rent the property.

Whatever your accommodation needs may be, Colombia welcomes digital nomads with open arms, offering a variety of options to suit every lifestyle and budget.

Additionally, local SIM card options from companies such as Claro, Movistar, and Tigo provide convenient mobile internet solutions for digital nomads on the go.

With affordable data plans and widespread coverage, and prices ranging from $35,000 COP ($9 USD approximately) to $120,000COP ($30 USD approximately), you can stay connected to the internet from virtually anywhere in Colombia, whether you’re exploring vibrant city streets or remote mountain villages.

To acquire a phone SIM card in Colombia, you’ll only need to present a valid ID and proof of address, which can include documentation from your Airbnb or hotel. It’s advisable to obtain your SIM card from official retail outlets to ensure authenticity and avoid potential issues associated with street vendors.

Additionally, you’ll be required to provide a copy of your passport.

It’s worth noting that there have been reports of identity theft, particularly for individuals holding short-term visas of less than 30 days. Therefore, it’s essential to exercise caution and safeguard your personal information during the SIM card acquisition process.

Transportation

Colombia boasts a diverse transportation system that caters to the needs of locals and visitors alike.

In major cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, public transportation options include buses, taxis, and those modern metro systems, offering convenient and affordable ways to navigate urban areas.

Buses are a popular mode of transportation in Colombia, with extensive networks covering most cities and towns and with ticket price at $3,200COP for 2024.

They provide a cost-effective way to travel both within cities and between different regions of the country. While buses vary in comfort and reliability, they are generally accessible and widely used by commuters and travelers.

In Colombia you will also be able to get the common transportation platforms. Yes, in case you were wondering, Uber works in the country! and there are some other options, like Didi, Beat or Cabify.

All of these apps offer the safest way for transportation, a more private and direct one, with fixed prices in order to avoid any possible misunderstandings, and being the most convenient option, really.

Colombia’s major cities also boast modern metro systems, providing efficient and rapid transit options for commuters.

Medellín, for example, is renowned for its innovative metro system, which includes trains, cable cars, and metro buses, seamlessly connecting different parts of the city and surrounding areas. The metro systems are known for their cleanliness, safety, and reliability, making them a popular choice for both locals and tourists and the general ticket price starts at $3,650 COP.

In addition to traditional transportation options, ride-sharing services like Uber have gained popularity in Colombia in recent years, offering convenient and affordable alternatives to taxis.

Safety and security

Safety and security in Colombia have significantly improved over the past decade, but challenges still exist in certain areas. The country has made considerable progress in reducing crime rates and improving its reputation as a tourist and expat destination.

However, it is important to remain vigilant, especially in major cities and remote regions where criminal activity may still occur. In terms of safety tips and precautions, it’s advisable to stay informed about the current situation in the areas you plan to visit or reside in.

This includes checking official travel advisories, local news sources, and consulting with other expats or digital nomads who have experience living in Colombia.

Some general safety precautions include avoiding displaying valuables in public, using secure transportation options, and being cautious when withdrawing money from ATMs.

Connecting with local communities of expats or other digital nomads can provide valuable insights and support networks for navigating safety concerns and adapting to life in Colombia.

These communities often organize social events, networking opportunities, and provide advice on safe neighborhoods, housing options, and cultural integration.

Medellín, once known for its high crime rates, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years.

The city has invested heavily in urban development projects, infrastructure improvements, and community initiatives aimed at reducing violence and promoting social inclusion.

As a result, Medellin has become one of Colombia’s safest and most dynamic cities, attracting expats, entrepreneurs, and digital nomads from around the world.

When considering safety in Medellin, it’s essential to be aware that, like any urban area, certain neighborhoods may have higher crime rates than others.

Generally, areas such as El Poblado, Laureles, and Envigado are considered among the safest neighborhoods in the city. These areas offer a vibrant cultural scene, excellent amenities, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

By staying connected with local communities, following safety tips and precautions, and choosing neighborhoods wisely, expats and digital nomads can enjoy all that Colombia has to offer while minimizing risks.

Cost of living as a digital nomad in Medellín

Among every aspect that we have mentioned above, there’s the fact that we must highlight and of course that is the cost of living here for digital nomads presents a huge benefit for your pocket.

As we have described in our previous blogs on why moving and living in Colombia became so popular these days, the economical aspect is one of the most attractive ones.

For reference, $1 USD equals, for the date this post is being written, $3,926 COP.

Now, with this in mind, and knowing that as a digital nomad you may be getting paid in USD or EUR, the Colombian peso goes a long way for your budget.

With the current currency exchange, you can get lunch for about $6 USD, and pay as low as $2 USD for a beer.

You can pay rent in a nice neighborhood for about $900-$1,200 USD per month for a fully furnished apartment, and include the basic utilities, such as electricity, heat, air conditioning, water, and garbage, that will cost about $80 USD per month.

Currently, the cost of living in Medellín, for example, is 70% less than living in the United States while still offering a great amount of luxuries and amenities, including rent, utilities, telephone, internet, cable, food, entertainment and public transportation.

You can easily live in a fairly luxurious lifestyle for just a few hundred dollars more than the average social security or pension income and be saving up those extra dollars into an even more luxury type of lifestyle or even for some holiday vacations.

This being said, the option is yours to live a middle class styled life or a more luxurious one if you really retire in Medellín, either one is highly accessible to foreigners, being Colombia one of the cheapest countries to live in.

For example, according to the DANE (National Statistics System), to be considered part of the middle class in the country, your monthly income must be between $781.120 y $4.206. 033 COP or $198,96 to $1,071 USD, to the date this post is being written.

In Medellín, you can live SO comfortably for a month for just that, to break it down for you
