El Visa V – Nómada Digital is a Visitor (V) visa category created under Article 46 of Resolución 5477 de 2022 (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores), issued to implement the digital-nomad regime mandated by Article 16 of Ley 2069 de 2020. It authorizes foreigners to live in Colombia while working remotely — as an employee or independent contractor for a company outside Colombia, or running their own foreign-registered digital business.
Because it’s a Visitor visa, not a Migrant (M) visa, it works differently from the visas that lead toward permanent residency — a distinction covered in detail in section 8. For the full picture of how Colombia’s visa system is structured, see our Colombian Visa 2026 requirements guide.
Contrary to what many guides suggest, this visa is not open to absolutely any nationality without conditions. Your passport must be issued by a country on Colombia’s short-stay visa-exemption list — this is the actual eligibility gate, not a bilateral “digital nomad agreement” with your home country.
- You must work for a foreign employer or foreign clients, or run a business registered outside Colombia. A Colombian labor contract or Colombian-payroll employment disqualifies you from this category.
- Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining at the time of application.
- You must not have a disqualifying criminal record, evidenced by a background check from your home country issued no more than 3 months before applying.
People with remote or passive income sometimes qualify for more than one visa category, and picking the wrong one can cost years. The two most commonly confused categories are the Digital Nomad visa and the M Rentista visa:
| Digital Nomad (V) | M Rentista | |
|---|---|---|
Under Article 46, applicants must demonstrate monthly income of at least 3 times Colombia’s SMMLV (salario mínimo mensual legal vigente), verified through bank statements covering the 3 months before you apply.
At the 2026 SMMLV of $1,750,905 COP — fixed provisionally by Decreto 159 de 2026 while the Consejo de Estado reviews a legal challenge to the original wage decree — that threshold works out to approximately $5,252,715 COP per month (roughly USD 1,400, depending on the exchange rate). Because the underlying SMMLV figure is still under judicial review this year, treat this as the current applicable amount rather than a number fixed for the rest of 2026.
Documentos Requeridos
- Health insurance covering the full length of your requested stay, and it must explicitly include accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, and repatriation coverage. Basic travel insurance without these specific coverages is not accepted.
- Criminal background certificate from your country of residence, issued within the last 3 months, apostilled or legalized as required.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your application date.
- Proof of your remote work arrangement — an employment letter, contractor agreement, or business registration showing your employer or clients are based outside Colombia.
Cómo Aplicar: Paso a Paso
- Confirm your passport is on Colombia’s visa-exemption list before starting — this determines eligibility before anything else.
- Gather your documents: 3 months of bank statements showing income at or above the threshold, health insurance with repatriation coverage, a recent criminal background certificate, and proof of your remote work relationship.
- Apply through SITAC, Cancillería’s official online visa system, where you upload your documents and pay the applicable study and issuance fees.
- Wait for Cancillería’s review. Processing times vary — apply with enough lead time before any planned travel.
- Once approved, apply for your cédula de extranjería through Migración Colombia if your visa is valid for more than 3 months — see our foreign ID card in Colombia guide for the full process.
On fees: Cancillería’s visa study and issuance tariffs are adjusted periodically. Confirm the current amount directly on the Cancillería visa portal before applying — published third-party figures for this specific category are inconsistent and shouldn’t be relied on for budgeting.
Vigencia y Renovación
The Digital Nomad visa is valid for up to 2 years. Renewal is available, though Cancillería’s published guidance on the exact renewal conditions is limited — in practice, expect to re-demonstrate the same income threshold and maintain valid insurance coverage. Confirm your specific renewal requirements with Cancillería or a qualified advisor as your visa’s expiration approaches, rather than assuming automatic continuation.
No — and this is the single most misunderstood fact about this visa. Colombia’s path to permanent residency (the Resident/R visa) works through time accumulated on a Migrant (M) visa, under Article 90 of Resolución 5477 de 2022. The Digital Nomad visa is a Visitor (V) category, structured as a temporary authorization with no accumulation mechanism toward the R visa.
In practice, this means years spent in Colombia on a Digital Nomad visa don’t shorten your path to residency at all. If permanent residency is part of your plan, you need a Migrant visa category that fits your situation — see our guide on making Colombia your permanent home for how the M-to-R visa pathway actually works, and how long each category takes.
Impuestos: Lo que Necesitan Saber los Nómadas Digitales
Holding this visa does not automatically make you a Colombian tax resident. Under Article 10 of the Estatuto Tributario, you become a tax resident once you spend more than 183 days within any 365-day period in Colombia — a threshold that applies regardless of visa type.
The tax implications of crossing that threshold — what income becomes taxable, DIAN filing obligations, and how to plan around it — are covered in full in our dedicated guides: how taxes work for digital nomads and remote workers in Colombia y do you pay taxes working remotely from Colombia on this visa. Don’t assume that because you’re a “visitor,” Colombian tax rules don’t apply to you once you cross 183 days.
Costo de Vida y Dónde Vivir
Medellín remains the most common base for digital nomads in Colombia, thanks to its climate, infrastructure, and coworking scene, though Bogotá and coastal cities also have growing nomad communities. Housing costs and neighborhood-by-neighborhood pricing vary significantly — our cost of living in Medellín 2026 breakdown y apartments for rent in Medellín guide cover the practical numbers in detail, since those figures shift often enough that they deserve their own dedicated, regularly updated resource rather than a summary here.
Qué Pasa Si Niegan tu Solicitud
Digital Nomad visa applications get denied for the same reasons most Colombian visa applications fail: incomplete or inconsistent income documentation, insurance that doesn’t meet the specific coverage requirements, or discrepancies between your stated remote-work arrangement and your supporting documents. A denial is not necessarily final — depending on whether Cancillería classified the decision as an inadmissibility or a denial, you may be able to correct the issue and reapply, or you may need to wait out a specified period first. Our guide to what happens if your Colombian visa is denied walks through that distinction and the reapplication process in detail.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming any nationality qualifies. Your passport needs to be on Colombia’s visa-exemption list — check this before you invest time in the rest of the application.
- Buying basic travel insurance instead of a policy with repatriation coverage. Cancillería’s requirement is specific; generic travel insurance is commonly rejected.
- Assuming this visa builds toward residency. It doesn’t. If residency is the goal, you need a Migrant (M) visa category from the start.
- Ignoring the 183-day tax residency threshold. Visa status and tax residency are governed by different rules — crossing 183 days triggers Colombian tax obligations regardless of your visa type.
- Working for a Colombian employer while on this visa. The category requires a foreign employer or foreign clients — a Colombian labor contract falls outside what this visa authorizes.
- Letting your income documentation lapse before a renewal. Since the SMMLV — and therefore the income threshold — can change, confirm the current figure before renewing rather than assuming last year’s number still applies.
FAQ
