Colombian visa: Did You Enter the country Early in 2025? Be Careful with the 180-Day Limit

colombian visa limit stay
If you entered the country in January or February 2025 and still don’t have a Colombian visa, you may be approaching the legal limit for staying in Colombia without one.

Many foreigners arrive in Colombia early in the year—whether to explore, work remotely, or enjoy a long-term stay.
But if you entered the country in January or February 2025 and still don’t have a Colombian visa, you may be approaching the legal limit for staying in Colombia without one.

How long can you stay in Colombia without a Colombian visa?

Under Colombian immigration law, foreigners are only allowed to stay in the country for up to 180 days per calendar year without a Colombian visa.
This includes all combined stays on tourist permits or entry stamps.

So if you entered in January, your 180 days are probably almost up.

💡 Example:
If you arrived on January 15, 2025, your maximum stay would end around mid-July. After that, each additional day becomes a legal violation—unless you’ve applied for a Colombian visa.

What happens if you stay longer than allowed?

Overstaying your permitted time is not a minor issue. It can result in serious consequences, such as:

  • Fines from Migración Colombia

  • Deportation

  • Future restrictions on entering the country

Additionally, if you later try to apply for a Colombian visa, a history of overstaying may negatively impact your chances of approval.

What can you do if you’re approaching the 180-day limit?

If you haven’t left Colombia and haven’t updated your immigration status yet, now is the time to take action:

✅ Check whether you’re eligible for a Colombian visa (such as a digital nomad, investment, student, or family visa)
✅ Start your Colombian visa application before reaching the 180-day mark
✅ Request a travel report from Migración Colombia to confirm your time in the country
✅ Plan a strategic exit if necessary to avoid penalties and preserve future options

Don’t Risk Your Stay—Apply for a Colombian Visa in Time

Staying longer than allowed may seem harmless—but immigration violations can follow you for years.
